China to take 10 yrs to be 2nd largest Internet revenue market

Printer Friendly Email Article

Mar. 20, 2006 (China Knowledge) – China will likely take around a decade to become the second-largest market in terms of revenue, Google Inc said.

Johnny Chou, co-president of Google Inc''s Greater China operations, told XFN-Asia on the sidelines of a Nanjing Internet conference that China could have the largest number of users within five years. However, in terms of pure revenues, it will take longer, about 10 years. He noted that China''s current advertising market is worth about RMB 100 billion, and out of this, search engine advertising made up less than 1%.

Chou compared China to Japan, saying China still lags behind its neighbor – the revenue per click in Japan is much higher for each user in comparison with China. He also mentioned that the growth of the Internet in China will depend on the development of the poorer western regions and the development of laws and infrastructure to support e-commerce.

Google''s share of Chinese user searches last year grew to 26.9% from 22.4% in 2004, according to iResearch in Shanghai.
